BS Health, Safety, & Environmental Management

The BS Health, Safety, and Environmental Management (BS HSEM) programme is designed to empower students with essential knowledge and practical skills needed to foster and maintain safe, healthy, and sustainable environments. Combining a multidisciplinary approach, this programme integrates key principles of occupational health, workplace safety, environmental sustainability, and risk management. Graduates are thoroughly prepared for rewarding careers across diverse industries, prioritising the protection of human health and the preservation of the environment.

The programme aims to develop a strong foundation in occupational health and safety principles, hazard identification, risk assessment, and accident prevention strategies; provide knowledge of environmental management systems, sustainability practices, and regulatory compliance to minimise environmental impact; equip students with technical and managerial skills for workplace safety management, emergency preparedness, and pollution control; enable students to apply scientific principles in HSEM to improve workplace safety and environmental sustainability, and promote ethical leadership and decision-making in health, safety, and environmental management roles. 

Mission

To equip graduates with the expertise and ethical foundation to excel in health, safety, and environmental management, ensuring organisational well-being, sustainable practices, and continuous innovation to protect human health and the environment. 

Program Educational Objectives
  1. Graduates will apply health, safety, and environmental management principles to identify hazards, assess risks, and implement effective safety measures, ensuring workplace safety and environmental sustainability across various industries.
  2. Graduates will make responsible and ethical decisions by integrating sustainability, regulatory compliance, and best practices to protect human health, the environment, and organisational well-being.
  3. Graduates will continuously enhance their knowledge and skills by adopting new technologies, research-based solutions, and innovative strategies to address emerging challenges in health, safety, and environmental management.

PLO-2 Problem Analysis: Identify, analyse, and assess hazards and risks in workplace and environmental contexts, formulating effective and practical mitigation strategies using established methodologies.

PLO-3 Design/Development of Solutions: Design and implement safety protocols, health management plans, and environmental conservation strategies that meet regulatory, ethical, and operational standards across diverse industries.

PLO-4 Investigation: Conduct investigations of incidents, near misses, and environmental impacts using scientific principles, data analysis, and evidence-based methods to develop actionable insights and improvements.

PLO-5 Tool Usage: Utilise contemporary tools, technologies, and software for hazard identification, safety audits, environmental monitoring, and emergency preparedness to enhance workplace safety and environmental compliance.

PLO-6 The HSE Specialist and the World: Analyse the broader societal, environmental, and global impacts of health, safety, and environmental management practices, and develop strategies that contribute to sustainable development and the global advancement of environmental health standards.

PLO-7 Ethics: Demonstrate ethical responsibility and integrity by adhering to legal standards, organisational policies, and professional codes of practice in health, safety, and environmental management.

PLO-10 Project Management and Finance: Apply principles of project management, including budgeting, resource allocation, risk assessment, and cost-benefit analysis, to effectively design, implement, and oversee health, safety, and environmental projects within time and financial constraints.

PLO-11 Lifelong Learning: Engage in lifelong learning and professional development to keep pace with evolving technologies, emerging risks, and best practices in health, safety, and environmental management. 

Graduates of the BS Health, Safety, and Environmental Management programme are equipped with strong technical, managerial, and ethical competencies, enabling them to lead safety initiatives, implement environmental sustainability practices, and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations. They have promising career opportunities across various industries, including roles such as Health and Safety Manager, HSE Specialist, Industrial Hygienist, Safety Compliance Officer, Safety Advisor, and Associate Director of Safety, Health, and Security, thereby contributing significantly to safer workplaces and healthier communities.
