Pakistan with a population of over 180 million individuals has an estimated over 20 million suffering from communication, swallowing and/or hearing disorders. To cater to this huge demand there are less than twenty Speech Language Therapists/ Pathologists (SLTs/SLPs) in our metropolis, Karachi, qualified internationally and locally at the CSLHS. This was made possible because the Speech and Hearing Association of Pakistan (SHAP) and Ziauddin University (ZU) toiled collaboratively to establish the ‘College of Speech Language & Hearing Sciences (CSLHS)’ in order to launch our nation’s first 4-year Bachelor’s program in Speech Language Therapy in 2007; within.

The establishment of the College of Speech Language and Hearing Sciences (CSLHS) in Karachi, Pakistan, in 2007 is a significant step in addressing the vast demand for speech-language therapists and audiologists in the country. With a population of over 250 million and an estimated 22 million individuals suffering from communication, swallowing, and/or hearing disorders, the shortage of qualified professionals in this field is evident.
CSLHS plays a crucial role in bridging this gap by offering a comprehensive curriculum that prepares students to become skilled and knowledgeable professionals in speech-language pathology and audiology. The college provides both diplomas, undergraduate and postgraduate programs, namely the Diploma of Childhood Development Program, Diploma in Multi Re/habilitation of Children with Special Needs, Diploma in learning disability, Bachelor of Science in Audiology & Speech Language Therapy (BS ASLT), and the Master of Science in Speech Language Pathology (MS SLP).
The curriculum at CSLHS covers a wide range of subjects related to speech-language pathology and audiology, including linguistics, anatomy, and physiology of speech and hearing mechanisms, assessment and intervention techniques, auditory rehabilitation, neurology, and research methodology. By providing theoretical knowledge, practical training, and clinical experience, the college equips students with the necessary skills to assess, diagnose, and treat various communication disorders.
Practical training opportunities in the form of clinical practicum experiences are also offered, allowing students to gain hands-on experience by working with clients in on-campus clinics or externship placements in various healthcare settings. This exposure helps students apply their knowledge and develop their clinical skills under the supervision of experienced professionals.
The faculty at CSLHS consists of experienced professionals, including speech-language pathologists, audiologists, and researchers, who are dedicated to providing quality education and mentorship to students. Their engagement in research activities contributes to advancements in the field and enhances the quality of education provided to the students.
Upon graduation, students from CSLHS have various career options, including working in hospitals, clinics, schools, research institutions, private practice, or academic settings. They can provide assessment, diagnosis, and intervention services to individuals with communication and hearing disorders, assist individuals with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) needs, conduct research, or contribute to policy development in the field.

After 10 years of commencement, the CSLHS upgraded the undergraduate program last year, to a BS in Audiology & speech Language Therapy. And simultaneously it proposes to launch the post graduation in MS speech language pathology (MS SLP), with the MS in Audiology to be launched after graduation of the first batch of BS ASLT the graduates.These programs will provide students with an opportunity to work towards a career as an audiologist and/or speech language therapist. The field of Audiology deals with the non-medical management of the auditory and balance systems and focuses on the study of normal and impaired hearing, prevention of hearing loss, identification and assessment of hearing and balance problems and rehabilitation of persons with hearing and balance disorders.

Introduction
The college successfully launches a dual degree program of Bachelors’ in Audiology and Speech Language Therapy (BS ASLT) with a post graduate MS Speech Language Pathology (MS SLP) proposed for commencement; as it joyously celebrates its first decade in Ziauddin University, Karachi. The programs ambitiously aim to equip graduates to independently evaluate and treat speech, language, hearing and swallowing disorders, conduct research and contribute to the development of the profession, nationally and in the world at large. It cultivates critical thinking to analyze and act in response to contexts that shape policy and practice in the fields of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology.

Verbal communication skills exalt the essence of human existence, so much so that people having good speech are often considered more successful in life at large. What then becomes of those who are unable to expresses their thoughts, ideas and even needs verbally in an effective way? Centuries ago they would be banished socially and regarded as incapable. Methods of correcting the speech of such hapless individuals would be considered ‘strange’ in today’s day and age; such as holding marbles in one’s mouth when talking!!!
The last century saw a revolution in the realm of speech language pathology, with the understanding of ‘brain and language’ or neurolinguistics. The disorders of speech and language were segregated into two major dimensions of understanding and speaking, with their further classification on the basis of etiology, and clinical symptomatology. Another major development was made in the realm of feeding and swallowing disorders or dysphagia, in children and adults. The CSLHS boasts of being the only institute in the country that provides neuromuscular electrical stimulation for swallow disorders through Vital Stim.
The field of Audiology goes hand in hand with speech language pathology, hence the College of Speech Language & Hearing Sciences provides a dual degree in the two realms at the undergraduate level, with state of the art audiology clinic for evaluations and aural rehabilitation.
Thus begins the need of multidisciplinary teams working with patients, with the CSLHS housing professionals from the fields of psychology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech and language therapy and audiology all under one roof, who work collaboratively to alleviate the communication disorders. The CSLHS also stands committed to early intervention of speech, language, voice, hearing and swallowing disorders in children and adults.
We endeavor to provide assessment and treatment to the entire spectrum of verbal communication disorders through all age groups of children and adults deserving our attention within Pakistan and beyond. Therefore we lay emphasis on clinical training of our students from the first year through to final year, along with their studies in the eight modules of speech pathology, language pathology, linguistics, biological and medical sciences, psychology, audiology, research methodology and clinical procedures. Graduation is followed by a year of clinical internship. Having a custom built campus catering to the realm of speech language therapy, we believe in imparting knowledge and skill to our students that is at par with any institution of our kind across the globe. Our commitment to excellence is manifest in our regular indulgence in continuing professional development, of our faculty. Our mission to establish evidence based practice, through research is a goal we endeavor to achieve through our faculty, consultants and students, engaging actively in research.
